Title of Event: Susan Marie Swanson, Author & Poet
When: Saturday, May 10, 2008 10:30 AM Location: Red Balloon Bookshop Description:
May 10, Saturday, 10:30am
SUSAN MARIE SWANSON
Poet & Author
Publication Party for The House in the Night and To Be Like the SunPoet. Author Susan Marie Swanson's first published piece was a poem about snowflakes that appeared in the weekly town newspaper when she was ten years old. Although she is grown up now and lives in the city of Saint Paul, she still writes poems. Today you'll have the opportunity to hear her read from her new poetry picture books. In The House in the Night, a key, a bed, and the moon are a few of the things that offer reassurance about night and the comfort of home. Daytime things and growing things are celebrated in To Be Like the Sun when a young girl waters and watches her garden to see what will appear. First there's a shoot, then a stem, a leaf, a bud – and finally a brilliant sunflower reaching high for the sun. At the party today, you will plant some seeds to take home and watch grow.

Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation
by
Roberts, Cokie
In Founding Mothers, Cokie Roberts paid homage to the women who helped establish our nation. Now she continues the story of more remarkable women and their achievements in moving the fledgling nation foward, from the election of John Adams in 1796 to the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828. Roberts reveals the often surprising and compelling stories of determined and passionate woman who courageously faced the challenges of times and laid the groundwork for a better society, including: Rebecca Gratz, one of the most beautiful and gracious women in Philadelphia society, known as "the foremost American Jewess of her day," who devoted her life to helping the poor and the orphaned. Dolley Madison, the strong-willed woman whose bravery and insight shaped the new capital of Washington, DC, during peace and war. Thoedosin Burr, Aaron Burr's devoted daughter, a brilliant, independent, highly educated, and freethinking woman ahead of her time who was groomed for greatness by her doting father. |

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey
by
Stewart, Trenton Lee,
Sudyka, Diana
The fabulous foursome readers embraced as The Mysterious Benedict Society is back with a new mission, significantly closer to home. After reuniting for a celebratory scavenger hunt, Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance are forced to go on an unexpected search--a search to find Mr. Benedict. It seems that while he was preparing the kids' adventure, he stepped right into a trap orchestrated by his evil twin Mr. Curtain.
With only one week to find a captured Mr. Benedict, the gifted foursome faces their greatest challenge of all--a challenge that will reinforce the reasons they were brought together in the first place and will require them to fight for the very namesake that united them. |
