Karolina is a wooden doll that works as a seamstress in the Land of Dolls. However, when the rats invade her country and kill her people, Karolina is forced to flee and is called to the human world by a kind wind. There, she meets the dollmaker, a lonely old man that owns a toy shop in Krakow, Poland in the year 1939. The dollmaker is stunned when Karolina comes to life, but they quickly become close friends. However, when Germany invades Poland and Nazi soldiers start attacking their Jewish friends, Karolina and the dollmaker work together to help them however they can. This story was the perfect mix of history and fantasy, and the parallels between the doll world and the real world are a great tool to help younger readers understand the impact of the Holocaust and World War II. -- Kelsie (RBB Staff)
