Beautiful water color paintings illustrate the story of Carolus Linnaeus, the man who grew from a boy fascinated by plants to become the person who courageously classified the natural world. Before Karl's time, names for plants and animals were very long and they changed from region to region depending on where they were found and who was doing the naming. At first Karl's classifications were seen as heretical, but in time, after his own students went out into the world spreading Karl's new ideas, people came to appreciate his enormous contribution. His work allowed scientists all over the world to communicate with one another. There is lots of detail in this well-constructed biography but it's not overwhelming, just inspiring! -- Susan (RBB Staff)
