It’s the Red Balloon Bookshop 2020 Summer Reading Challenge!
Things might be a bit different this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun with our annual summer reading challenge!
To get started on your summer reading challenge (pick one):
1. Download the PDF (see above) of the summer reading challenge worksheet and print it at home.
2. In the order comments of an online order for delivery, shipping, or pick-up, request a copy (or copies) of the worksheet.
3. Send us an email with your full mailing address requesting a worksheet(s) be mailed to you.
Summer Reading Rules
As you read, fill in each square with the title of a book that matches the category. Each box should have a different title, so if a book matches multiple categories, just pick which one you want to use it for.
When you complete a bingo, email us a photo of the sheet (firstname.lastname@example.org), leave it in the pick-up box between 10-5, or mail it to the store. We’ll get your prizes ready for pick-up or to be mailed to you. A bingo counts as any four consecutive squares (diagonals count). You can also wait to turn in your bingo sheet until you have completed all of the challenges, including the blackout.
This Summer Reading Challenge ends on August 31st, 2020. All bingo sheets must be turned in or postmarked by that date to be eligible for prizes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose which books to read?
We strongly recommend finding books by Black authors or by other authors of color to fill in all or most of the squares on your summer reading worksheet. Otherwise it’s up to you! Having trouble with a particular category for a particular age group? Please just email us at email@example.com or call us and ask—we have ideas!
Who can participate in the reading challenge?
Anyone (though only kids and teens will get prizes)! If you’re reading independently, boxes should be filled in with books you’ve ready by yourself. If you’re still learning to read, fill in boxes with books you’ve read with a family member or friend.
Should books be fiction or nonfiction?
All categories can be filled by either except “read a biography or autobiography”!
What counts as a Red Balloon recommendation?
Any of the books on our Staff Favorites page or on our Book Recommendation Lists count (keep checking the Book Recommendation Lists page—we’re adding to it all the time)!
Do audiobooks count? What about graphic novels?
Yes and yes! Books can be in any format to qualify, as long as they match the other criteria. We recommend Libro.fm for audiobooks that support indie bookstores like us!
Can I use the same book for multiple boxes?
Nope! The goal is to read lots of books you might not read otherwise, so each box needs to be filled with its own book title.
