The Maud Hart Lovelace & Star of the North Awards

The Maud Hart Lovelace and Star of the North Book Awards are Children's Choice Book Awards and are facilitated by the Minnesota Youth Reading Awards (MYRA) organization. Red Balloon Bookshop is proud to promote these great programs!

Maud Hart Lovelace Award

The Maud Hart Lovelace Award's purpose is to encourage recreational reading among school-aged children. Division I titles are intended for grades 3-5 and Division II titles are intended for grades 6-8.

The 2023 Division I winner is City Spies by James Ponti. The honorable mentions are Coop Knows the Scoop by Taryn Souders and Measuring Up by Lily LaMotte, illustrated by Ann Xu.

 The 2023 Division II winner is White Bird by R.J. Palacio. The honorable mentions are Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley and City Spies by James Ponti.




The Star of the North Award's purpose is to promote quality, engaging picture books and reading for pleasure among school-aged children. This award is focused on picture books intended for a kindergarten through 2ndStar of the North Award grade audience. However, pre-k and older children are also welcome to participate.

The 2023 Star of the North winner is The Box Turtle by Vanessa Roeder. The honorable mentions are Federico and the Wolf by Rebecca J. Gomez, illustrated by Elisa Chavarri, and The Paper Kingdom by Helena Ku Rhee, illustrated by Pascal Campion.
