Pet lives in a lighthouse in England with her father, her sister Mags, and Mutti, her mother. It is the beginning of WWII and everyone is worried about a German invasion. Someone in their village is in league with the enemy, and it is Pet's German mother who is accused and sent to an internment camp. Pet must cope with her secretive sister, her stubborn father, and the strange man who lives nearby. She is a girl afraid of so much, and yet, she throws herself into the mystery and magic surrounding her, and comes out so much stronger. Although this is written for the 8-12 year old there is death, and estrangement, and all of the emotions that most adults have difficulty with; an excellent book showing us the true tragedy of war. Perfect for those who love The War That Saved My Life, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. — Julie (RBB Staff)
