Read Brave uses the power of stories to build awareness and empathy on a theme relevant to our Saint Paul community. Read Brave connects readers of all ages to one another through the five books, their authors, programs, activities, and calls to action.
The theme this year is Owning Our Stories: Rising Together for a Better Saint Paul. We will center the conversations around self-worth, healing, reconciliation, liberation, and accountability as they relate to the characters and BIPOC authors in our Read Brave programs.
The two primary book choices for 2020 are The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus and Children of the Land: A Memoir by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo.
For Read Brave Kids, SPPL has chosen three books: Front Desk by Kelly Yang, Astrid and Apollo and the Starry Campout by V. T. Bidania, and We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom and illustrated by Michaela Goade.
